PR Professional of the Year (in-house or agency)
Winner: Kathleen Gallagher, Quilter
Many congratulations to Quilter’s Kathleen Gallagher who saw off extremely fierce competition to land this special award as decided by the financial journalist community. Kathleen’s focus has been the media strategy for Quilter Financial Planning (QFP), the advice business of Quilter. “In the past it has followed a reactive press strategy, but I was keen to prove the benefit of promoting the organisation’s expertise as well as ensuring it was communicating to the wider adviser and consumer audiences clearly about their business,” she pointed out in her submission.
“In 2019 QFP made two major acquisitions (Lighthouse and Charles Derby), rebranded from Intrinsic and launched a major study, Adviser Delta. To ensure these projects were clearly understood I employed a number of tactics, including: briefings with journalists; interviews with senior spokespeople, including the CEOs of QFP and Lighthouse; thought leadership from senior leaders; and a rebranding event to introduce the new senior leaders of QFP to journalists,” she explained.
The work boosted coverage for QFP by 41% and, more importantly, increased the understanding of its business and its spokespeople with the financial journalist community.
Highly Commended: Charlie Musson, AJ Bell
Commiserations to Charlie who heads up the AJ Bell PR team and just misses out on the top slot for 2020. Charlie personally delivered the PR campaign that supported the company’s Initial Public Offering, described by The Times as a “textbook listing”. In addition to managing the corporate PR, Charlie oversees all of the PR activity of the AJ Bell in-house team which is now widely regarded as one of the ‘go-to’ teams for commentary on stock markets, pensions and wider personal finance topics.
