Rising Star of the Year (Consumer)

On behalf of Helena Kelly, Money Mail, Daily Mail, Money Mail's Victoria Bischoff collects the trophy from Kevin Brown, Head of PR & Communications at Scottish Friendly and awards host Kerry Godliman

Winner: Helena Kelly, Money Mail, Daily Mail

The Rising Star category is open to journalists starting in consumer financial journalism after January 2020. The judging panel was really impressed by the quality of the submissions again this year and all five on the shortlist were potential winners after the online scoring. In the end, the panel agreed the award should go to Money Mail’s Helena Kelly.

Helena has an “excellent reporting style with lots of colour and examples, she is clearly proactive and investigative in her approach to reporting, leading to further action from named parties”, commented one judge. “Her story on renewable energy particularly impressed me – detailed and forceful,” said another.

Highly Commended: Jessica Beard, Telegraph Media Group

The judges had high praise for Jessica, commenting on the quality of submissions. One judge remarked that her “well-written articles draw the reader straight in”. “This reporter's piece on HMRC and the victims of pension scams really impressed with its depth and power,” said another.
